English

The English Department aims to motivate and inspire students of all abilities to achieve their full potential in skills that are key to vocational, academic and social success. Our department currently has 7 full time, 1 part time and 1 A Level specific English teachers, all of whom are passionate about their subject, and create a caring environment for students to explore social, moral and cultural issues arising in the texts studied.

What will I study

Key stage 3 is the building ground for success at GCSE. We have a new, exciting curriculum which reflects the changes in education and the new GCSE and Sixth Form requirements. Students study a range of literature and non-fiction, developing their Writing, Reading and Speaking and Listening skills through a range of activities. An enrichment focus for the department is to develop independent reading in our students.

At Key Stage 4 students will study GCSEs in English Language and English Literature, developing their confidence in the skills required to achieve their personal best. Our high expectations in both written and verbal work will mean that by the end of Year 11 students can express themselves effectively in a variety of situations, both inside and out of school.

At Key Stage 5 we look for students to become more self-motivated and independent learners, who are capable of organising their own studies in preparation for life after school. We offer A levels in Language and Literature, which can lead to a range of careers including journalism, speech therapy, teaching or many engineering related professions where a high level of competency in written and spoken English is essential.
