Modern Foreign Languages

Bonjour, Willkommen, ¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás?

Lessons in Modern Foreign Languages at St Benedict’s aim to equip students with the confidence and skills to understand and communicate in one or more major European Language –  French, German and Spanish.

The Modern Languages department makes full use of ICT and audio visual technology and has also acquired Wi-Fi and iPad technology.

For many years we have our experienced staff organise educational trips abroad and this is indicative of our enthusiasm and commitment to provide students with real life opportunities to practice their language skills and to gain a wider insight into French and German culture. We also hold trips to countries not included in the curriculum.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3 students will study one or two modern languages and will develop skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 the target language is used wherever possible to develop conversation skills, whilst ensuring that grammar and linguistic structures are easily understood.

Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5 students develop the comprehension and communication skills already acquired at GCSE to an advanced level whilst having the flexibility to specialise in areas of personal interest from a range of contemporary, social and cultural topics.
