Huge congratulations to our U15 Boys who were today crowned COUNTY CHAMPIONS!!

The team played their final against UTC at the Recreation Ground on 5th May and came away with a 24-8 win!

Our Year 10 team are a strong squad supplemented by one or two younger age players and were heavy favourites going into the final despite one or two absentees through injury or being unavailable.

The game with UTC started very tightly. Both teams were testing each other out and seeing out their sets, with good defensive efforts and minimal risk taken in the opening exchanges.

This changed when St Benedict’s began moving the ball across the pitch and increased the pace of their attacking play. Sure enough the talent on show didn’t disappoint as they scored three times inside the first half the secure a comfortable lead at the half way stage. The tries were shared out including a full length effort from hooker Kolbi J, which was the pick of the tries.

The second half began and St Benedict’s who were now settled really began to exert their dominance upfront and across the whole backline too. They dominated possession and made the opposition pay with some lovely, well worked team tries to run out 24-8 victors.

Mr Harrison, said:

“It was nice to see the boys express their talents and showcase the skills they possess in a county final. They really turned up and treated the crowd who turned up to support them with some nice moments to cheer.”

“The big hope for these lads is that they can really switch on into their final year next year and have a go at the national competition. Well done boys on another solid victory!”

Full Squad:

Jamie G(Captain), Max R, Layton I, Matthew N, Ethan L, Ollie M, Noah D, Riley P, Kolbi J, Joe O, Rudy M, Dainan A, Kylan B, Lucas B, Evan T and Rhys M

Our U15 Boys celebrating their win!

Our Year 8 Boys Rugby Squad have competed in their first COUNTY CUP FINAL. Unfortunately on this occasion they were pipped to the post by West Lakes Academy and were defeated 24-16.

Last year the squad were knocked out in the Semi-Finals. This year they showed great togetherness and determination to reach the final held at Whitehaven’s Recreation Ground vs West Lakes Academy.

They have had some tough games this year against the likes of Dowdales School, and St. Peters of Wigan as well as the local opposition in Netherhall School, Workington Academy and Whitehaven Academy. They have progressed well as a group and found this gave them an excellent platform to begin with against a strong West Lakes Academy team.

The match was very even throughout and the defensive effort from both teams was of a high standard. Both teams scored some nicely worked tries and the game was very evenly balanced and could have gone either way as there was only one score difference for large portions of the game.

The game was played in excellent sporting spirit but it was WLA who eventually came out on top due to fine athletic execution of two late tries to seal a 24-16 victory and retain their title.

Mr Harrison said:

“Our Year 8 lads will go again next year as the gap is closing significantly and will fancy themselves to go one better again next time around.  At times in youth rugby and sport generally you want to see the lads firstly enjoying it and secondly making progress as athletes. Both of those things are happening so we are proud of the lads. Well done all concerned with the squad.”

Full Squad:

Oscar C (Captain), Jensen M, Corby C, Riley R, Harry M, Ollie JL, Luca F, Xavier J, Jack R, Elijah M, Ewan S, Bobby M, Byron H, Carson L, Noah S, Joey B, Jayden M, Flynn M, Jack F, Oliver R

Some of our Sixth Form students are celebrating this week after being presented their awards for the British Biology Olympiad 2026.

The British Biology Olympiad challenges and stimulates students with an interest in biology to expand and extend their talents. It enables students to demonstrate their talent and to be suitably rewarded with certificates.

Our talented Year 13 biology students completed 2 x 45 minute papers online under exam conditions earlier this year.

We are very proud to announce that for this first time, we have two students who gained their GOLD AWARDS, as well as one SILVER AWARD.

Alan J and Harry R were our GOLD AWARD winners, who achieved over 74%.
Noah D gained the SILVER AWARD.

All of our other students gained Highly Commended/Commended or received their participation award.

Commended were Rowan J, and Jenson B.

All other students gained a participation certificate, and they were Annabel S, Isobel H, Finn McA, Tom L, Katie R, Cole T, Ava G, Tom M and Finn McD.

It was a pleasure to welcome Gary McKee into school yesterday to spend some time with our students.

Gary is coming towards to end of his latest challenge 💯to London, and we are pleased to announce we handed over £1000 to go towards his fundraising for Hospice at Home West Cumbria 🌻

This money was raised by our fabulous staff & students with their non-uniform and Easter fundraising.

Gary gave an inspirational talk to our Year 9 students, and also took time for a run with our Year 10 students, even though he had already completed a marathon that morning!

Good Luck with the rest of your challenge Gary, from all of us here at St Benedicts!

Welcome to our Easter Newsletter. Below you will find a letter from Mrs Jackson, plus a round up of the news highlight from this term, as well as upcoming dates for next term.

We hope you all have a restful Easter break and we will see you on Monday 13th April for the start of our summer term!

Dear Parents and Carers

As we approach the end of a term and continue our Lenten journey, I always enjoy reflecting on the many remarkable achievements of our students. This term is no exception. Our students make a positive contribution to our school and our community every day and they make me immensely proud.

School continues to be a hive of activity. Whether it be the buzz of learning around the classrooms, our sporting success on the field, or the many and varied after school clubs we have, there appears to have been something for everyone this term.

As always St Benedict’s has great sporting results, and we are currently participating in rugby, football, and netball events both locally and nationally. We have also had individual successes, most noticeably Annabelle Starkie who participated in the National Schools Cross Country Championships. Lastly, I mustn’t forget to mention our ever-growing darts club!

Our music and performing arts departments continue to go from strength to strength. We enjoyed our annual Carol service and music festival performances, and we are looking forward to our talent show and U Dance appearances.

We enjoyed lots of other activities such as world of work day, engineering projects, and our Bee bath enterprise project in Year 8. What continues to impress me daily is the attitude of our students towards their studies and their excellent behaviour around school. At this time of year, many staff are writing references for our Year 11 and 13 students, secondary education is the gateway to their future, and I am delighted that so many embrace all that St Benedict’s has to offer.

We move now into the summer term and will begin end of year exams for all students. This will be a chance for our students to show us what they can do. It will of course bring sadness too as we say goodbye to Years 11 and 13. We will also have the excitement of welcoming the new cohort of Year 7 to taster day, this year that is over 200 students from 24 primary schools.

Easter will be a time of rest and recuperation (and revision for our older students). I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed when we return in April.

Wishing you all a happy and Holy Easter.

Mrs Emma Jackson

12:00 am - 11:59 pm

This morning, we hosted a special Celebration Breakfast to reward students with excellent attendance.

Held in the dining hall, the event offered a relaxed start to the day with a selection of pastries,  and drinks for those who consistently show up ready to learn.

Staff joined the students to congratulate them on their dedication, highlighting how regular attendance supports progress, confidence, and success in school.

The event was a positive and uplifting way to recognise students’ efforts, and the school looks forward to celebrating even more attendance achievements in the coming terms.
