West Cumbria Teaching School Alliance

Teaching Schools have been established in order that schools and groups of schools take increasing responsibility for managing the schools system. The West Cumbria Teaching School Alliance (WCTSA) will be focusing in particular on the following areas:Ensuring recruitment and retention of high quality graduates who wish to train to be primary or secondary teachers (through School Direct).

Offering a range of opportunities to train across High Performing schools in different contexts and age ranges.

Providing training for staff wishing to progress in their careers into middle and senior leadership roles.

Selecting experienced and highly skilled practitioners wishing to train as Specialist Leaders of Education.  Their role will be to provide support to schools who have identified a need, or require support.

Ensuring that there are opportunities for staff to undertake research, and to gain higher qualifications.

There are a wide variety and types of schools in our Alliance, and we have the advantage of being in a beautiful part of the country, where there are great opportunities for work and recreation.

Secondary School Direct

The West Cumbria Teaching School Alliance is registered with School Direct and will be recruiting School Direct Trainees. We have a partnership with the University of Cumbria, and for Languages teaching with CfBT (Centre for British Teachers)

What is School Direct?

School Direct is a direct route into teaching, where successful applicants can follow a PGCE (with QTS) course. The main difference to the traditional PGCE course is that you will do a significant amount of your training within a school. One of the expectations, in addition to high quality training within a very diverse range of schools, is that trainees will go on to work within an Alliance School if suitable vacancies occur. WLTSA is working with the University of Cumbria, and with the following schools with the following subject choices:

  • Beacon Hill School
  • Cockermouth School
  • Keswick School
  • Mayfield Special School
  • Netherhall School
  • St Benedict’s Catholic High School
  • St Joseph’s RC School
  • Solway Community School
  • Ullswater Community College
  • West Lakes Academy
  • Whitehaven Academy
  • Workington Academy
