Once again, we have been fortunate to participate in the Lessons from Auschwitz programme, delivered by the Holocaust Education Trust. The purpose of the programme is to increase awareness of the Holocaust and its relevance for today. Students learn about the role of camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau and learn about some of the individuals whose lives were affected by the Holocaust.

Four students were chosen to represent St. Benedict’s: Alicia S, Corey D, Keisha P and Isabella R. To prepare for their visit, the students travelled to Newcastle to attend a seminar with the educators from the Holocaust Education Trust and to meet their fellow students from a range of northern schools. On Tuesday 18th November, our students flew out to Poland and spent the day visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau. Our students then participated in a follow-up seminar to discuss what they had seen. Alicia, Corey, Keisha and Isabella are currently planning their Next Steps project  which is an opportunity for them to share what they have learned and experienced with our school and wider community.
