Chemistry Students complete Challenge

Sixth Form students at St Benedict’s have this week been awarded for their work in two different Chemistry Competitions.

Firstly, Leah Dunn, Keira Morgan and Mary Kirsten Soriano (all year 12) were the winning team for our school in the Royal Society of Chemistry Schools’ Analyst Competition.

All AS Chemistry students took part in this year’s competition which was to help with the transformation of a family owned fish and chip restaurant. They wanted to change suppliers for some of their ingredients to those closer to the shop to reduce their carbon footprint and to support local businesses. They need to make sure that the quality of the food didn’t suffer.

In order to do this students were required to analyse the local flour, potatoes and vinegar for qualities associated with truly excellent fish and chips. Students were required to complete 4 – 6 hours of lab time which allowed students to demonstrate and expand on their existing chemistry knowledge and skills.

The team will now be entered into a second round against other winning teams from the regiona for the chance to be crowned champions!

Also awarded this week, was Ava Leadbetter from Year 12, who received a Copper award for her work in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.

This competition aims to stretch and challenge students interested in chemistry, and provides an excellent experience for anyone considering taking their studies further. Set by an experienced team of teachers and university chemists, it is designed to be accessible to Year 12 students but will take them significantly beyond the syllabus and encourage them to think about science in the way they would at university. Past papers will provide a valuable resource for teachers.

This competition was open to students studying in the UK in Year 12 or below. It took the form of a 90 minute written paper which students took in school.
