Some of our Sixth Form students attended a fantastic event last week, at UCLAN’s West Lakes Campus in Whitehaven.
The event entitled ‘Engineering your Future’, was an ideal opportunity for post-16 students to find out more about STEM related career opportunities.
As in past years it was supported by Professional Institutions such as IMechE, ICE, IoP, and IChemE. There was a range of workshops delivered by members of the Institutions. Each workshop was made up of a short presentation and then related hands-on activities.
This was followed by a ‘Market Place’ at lunchtime where students were able to talk to representatives from the Institutions, HE organisations and local businesses to find out just what STEM opportunities there are out there.
Mr Humphries from St Benedict’s accompanied the students:
‘Young engineers explained to the students how to they got into engineering and the four different areas of engineering (mechanical, chemical, civil and nuclear). The students were given variety of tasks to do including bridge building, process of making sugar and demonstrating the nuclear reactor.’
