Rugby Scholarship for St Benedict’s Boys

We are extremely proud to learn that three of our students were awarded a scholarship with Wigan Warriors this season.

The three players, all from Year 10, found out during the summer that they had been successful.

Sam Murtagh, Sam Fulton and Ashton Sice all follow in the footsteps of Harvey Hill who has previously been awarded the same scholarship at the club.

Miss Powe, subject leader for PE, commented:

“Sport at St Benedict’s provides students with the opportunities to excel locally, regionally and nationally.  So it is no surprise that we see our students begin pathways towards professional levels.”

“We are delight that talented rugby league players Sam Murtagh, Sam Fulton and Ashton Sice have joined the Wigan Warriors Scholarship Programme.  We wish them well for the season ahead and are extremely proud of their achievements.”

Laura Laughton, Aston’s Mam said:

“It’s such fantastic news for the boys, parents and family. We are all so proud of them!!”

Ashton is over the moon to have been selected for the scholarship having been a Wigan Warriors fan since he could pick up a rugby ball. He knows there is a lot of hard work ahead and sacrifices he will have to make in order to progress within the scholarship and balance his schooling/homework.

Sam Fulton’s parents added:

“We are so proud that Sam has been offered a scholarship with Wigan Warriors, his hard work and commitment over the last 18 months has finally paid off. Now the hard work begins but I’m sure with the support from school, family and friends Sam will do his very best to succeed.”

The boys have all received a two year scholarship with Wigan Warriors youth team. The head coach is Mick Cassidy (former Wigan Warriors player) and assistant coach is Anthony Atherton.

They will train through at Wigan twice a week. Progression from scholarship would be to join the Academy team for one year, and then if successful, they could gain professional contracts and join Wigan Warriors first team currently coached by Adrian Lam.

Training has begun in September, and we would like to wish the boys all the best with their season!
