We have also had the pleasure of interviewing Mrs Collins from the Engineering Department this term.
Where did you grow up and go to school and college?
I grew up in Whitehaven, my whole family are from here. I attended St Gregory’s and St Patrick’s infants, then St Begh’s juniors and then moved up here to St Benedict’s. I went on to Northumbria University to study Graphic Design and finally the University of Cumbria for my teaching degree.
Why did you decide to teach what you teach?
I always had a passion for design and spent most of my lunch times during KS4 in the DT department – G5 still looks exactly the same! I was influenced by two of my teachers, Mr Esslemont who taught DT and Mrs Peat who taught History.
Where and when was your first teaching job?
My first teaching job was at Southfield Secondary School in Workington (now the Workington Academy). I started there in 2012 and stayed there for two years before coming here.
What is the best thing about teaching secondary school?
Having the opportunity to guide students towards their chosen career pathways and seeing them achieve success.
How do you think students will remember you and your class?
I suppose it will depend who you ask! I’d like to think students would remember me for being committed to making sure they reach their potential and being someone who cares about all of the students, not just the ones I teach.
What is your favourite movie/book?
Too many to choose from, I like a lot of different types of films, feel good films like First Wives Club, action films like Pirates of the Caribbean or classics like Forest Gump.
Book would probably be To Kill a Mockingbird or the Harry Potter collection (although that’s cheating because that’s 6 books).
What is your idea of fun?
Time with friends and family, sunshine, holidays, good food, music. I love to see new places and do things I’ve never done before.
What is one of your hidden talents?
Having the patience of a saint!!!!
What would the students be surprised to find out about you?
I never actually wanted to be a teacher when I was younger, I sort of became a teacher by accident (a good accident in the end). Life has these weird ways of throwing curve balls at you, Most times they actually work out better than you imagined.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
To stop or slow down time, life goes too quickly – probably because I’m always counting down to the next half term!
List three words that describe you.
Ambitious, perfectionist, honest.
Name three things you love about your job.
1 – No day is ever the same – EVER!
2 – When a student has an idea that you wouldn’t expect to work – but we find a way to make it work.
3 – The fact that the students keep me on my toes, always expect the unexpected.
Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by?
“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think” Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh. (Every good lesson starts with a Disney film!)
