Mighty Bennies ready for Rock Challenge!

Our fantastic Rock Challenge team are heading to Carlisle today to showcase their performance entitled, ‘Outbreak’.

Captured in an African rainforest, a rare monkey is sold to a London zoo keeper… Unbeknown, the monkey carries a deadly virus!

Within hours, an outbreak sweeps rapidly across the city, and the government threaten to destroy the capital to avoid a pandemic. In the race against time can Dr Richards find a cure before the city is destroyed?

Students have been hard at work all year preparing their performance, with rehearsals every day this week, culminating in a full dress rehearsal in front of teachers and staff.

Miss Scott, Performing Arts teacher, said:

“This year the dedication of our team has been phenomenal with many students giving up their own time for rehearsals, fundraising, choreography, sound and set design. The theme this year is probably our most challenging yet, both in terms of choreography and drama; however, our team are doing everything possible to make sure their performance is perfect.”

Seventeen Cumbrian schools will take part across two days of Rock Challenge® and J Rock™ at the Sands Centre, Carlisle. Whilst fourteen schools will be competing, Cumbria is also home to three Premier Division teams, including St Benedict’s.

St Benedict’s along with Whitehaven Academy and West Lakes Academy will all be showcasing their performances, as they have retained their status as premier teams. They have automatically qualified for the Northern Premier Final at Grimsby Auditorium.

Rock Challenge is an annual performing arts competition, in which schools present an eight minute performance involving theatre, music and dance. Judges give marks for categories such as set design, costume, lighting, sound and more, which contribute to making their performance a reality as well as the performance itself.

The community support for our team this year has been tremendous and they have received the following donations:

  • Doosan Babcock                 £450.00
  • ADAPT                                  £450.00
  • Story Homes                       £600.00
  • Dobie’s                                  £150.00
  • GMB                                      £250.00
  • Shepley Engineers LTD     £200.00

This support has enabled the team to pay for key resources such as set, staging, costume, props as well as our entry fee into the competition. We are so grateful for the donations we have received.

We would also like to thank B&M Whitehaven for allowing us to bag pack in store, especially Lynne and Angela for organising the event in back in November. Thank you as well to all at Tesco Whitehaven for welcoming our team during their bag pack in December.
