Autism

The special needs department has a wealth of experience working with students who have an Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC).  The SENCo has previously run a unit for ASC children attached to a mainstream primary school, has been an ASC advisory teacher and has lectured for different ADC courses.

  • We have a Key Stage 3 specialist Senior Teaching Assistant (STA) for Autism – Miss Lisa Egan
  • We have a Key Stage 4 specialist STA for Autism – Miss Dawn McKee
  • All our ASC students are offered weekly courses for Autism (either Autism… What does it mean to me? or Asperger’s… What does it mean to me? Both by Catherine Faherty)
  • We offer additional personal skills programmes written by Fiona Speirs
  • We have separate rooms for break times and a smaller playground area.
  • Support is provided in lessons when necessary or some students can work in groups in a smaller classroom if necessary with an STA.
  • Weekly Key Stage 3 social skills groups studying for ASDAN qualifications.
  • After school provision can provide an opportunity to complete homework before going home.
  • Friday after school social skills Lego groups.
  • Monthly ASC support groups for parents/carers – one for Key Stage 3 and one for Key Stage 4.
  • Parents/carers can meet each other and discuss issues, learn more about what ASC is (especially if your child has only recently received a diagnosis), and sometimes we have visiting speakers.
